Now that August is well and truly underway, it’s the perfect time to start preparing your garden for the spring months ahead. Garden maintenance jobs like tidying, planting and soil preparation are great to start in the weeks leading up to spring, so in this week’s blog, we’ve decided to share a few of our top garden preparation tips for spring.
One of the first jobs to get out of the way is a general tidy up of your garden. Spring cleaning involves things like weeding (which is much easier to do in spring as the soil is still soft and weeds are still young, meaning their roots are shallow), adding mulch to bare spots around the garden to suppress the growth of more weeds, cleaning leaves from drains, repairing planter boxes, trellises and fences and more.
By the beginning of spring your shrubs and bushes are probably due for another trim. By pruning any stray or dead branches, your plants will look much tidier and will also be better protected from pests. Fruit trees are an especially good type of plant to prune around this time of year before their buds fully develop and bloom.
Just before spring is also a great time to plant a huge array of plants and vegetables, as seedlings will be more able to survive in the absence of hard frost. It’s a good idea to plant several vegetable varieties which all mature at different times so as to ensure a prolonged harvest. Now is also a fantastic time to plant any spring bulbs you may have. When planting, you must ensure that your soil is moist and nutrient rich, so it may be a good idea to add fertiliser, blood and bone mix, or extra mulch.
Spring is a wonderful time of year, and with the right care and attention your garden will really flourish. It’s also a great time of year to consider installing a concrete patio before the busy summer entertaining period.
