Aggregate Concrete Sealing FAQs

If you are looking for an aesthetically pleasing driveway surface that is hard wearing and doesn’t show stains, then aggregate concrete is the solution. This material is incredibly easy to maintain and only requires re-sealing to ensure it remains stylish and fully functional over it’s life cycle. In this article, we address some of the most commonly asked aggregate concrete maintenance questions our clients ask.

Why do I need to have my aggregate concrete sealed?

This type of concrete has an open pore design on the surface and a larger surface area than stamped concrete so the surface is more vulnerable to damage from water and contaminants. Applying a sealant helps the aggregate repel things like oil, stains, water and grease and protect it from common issues like spalling, dusting, abrasion and efflorescence. Aesthetically, sealants also deepen the colour of the aggregate and create that sleek ‘wet look’.

If I have recently installed a new aggregate driveway, will it be sealed?

Sealing is the final step in aggregate concrete installation and most reputable companies include this as part of their installation services or will be able to put you in contact with an experienced professional contractor.

How do I know if it needs re-sealing?

Generally speaking, aggregate driveways need to be re-sealed once every two years. For commercial premises which see a lot of traffic, more frequent re-sealing may be required.

Can I do it myself?

It is possible to reseal your aggregate concrete yourself and there are a number of commercially available sealants which you can use. However, improper surface or solution preparation and application can lead to bubbling, yellowing, a cloudy appearance, or an uneven finish. To achieve the best possible outcome and extend the life of your driveway, we recommend investing in professional resealing services.

Is there any other maintenance I need to do to keep my driveway in good condition?

Aggregate which has been properly installed and sealed makes an incredibly low maintenance driveway which only needs to be periodically hosed down to dislodge any dirt and grit that can get caught in the textured surface of the aggregate. Simply hose down your driveway in one direction and use a broom to help dislodge the dirt.
